INHACA FERRY SERVICES
Inhaca is situated 38km East of Maputo and the most common way to reach it, is by ferry. There are two ferries running, Kanyaka and Ribwene.
Kanyaka ferry can carry about 200 passengers. It runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Leaving from Maputo at 8am, except for Friday when it leaves at 11am, leaving Inhaca for Maputo at 3pm. Make sure to be at the departing point an hour before departure.
Ticket rates:
- Economic. Down stairs in the general area – 280 MT
- Down stairs lounge 500 MT
- Upstairs Deck 680 MT
Ribwene ferry can carry sixty passengers, first come first serve. In season it is best to get there at least two hours ahead of time to guarantee your seat. The ticket is 280 MT per person one way. Ribwene runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving Maputo at 8am and leaving Inhaca for Maputo at 3pm.
The ferry trip takes +- 2 hours but can be a half hour longer depending on the wind and sea conditions.
Times could change depending on weather.
Please note that no pre-booking is available for the ferry. Best is to be there at least an hour before departure to secure a seat.
Other Ways to get to Inhaca Island.
Motor boat charter. The trip takes 45 minutes. The boats can take 5 – 15 passengers.
Charter companies
Dhow. One can travel on a wooden sail boat from the Maputo Fish Harbour/ Porta do Peixe (GPS -25.976195, 32.570061). This is for the adventurer! These boats, carrying cargo for Inhaca, leaves at around 10 at night and arrives at Inhaca between 4 and 5 in the morning. They leave Inhaca around 9 in the morning for Maputo and arrives there between 2 and 3 in the afternoon. Fees are +- 300 MT per person.
Fly-In: Inhaca Island has a tarred runway airport which is 650 meters in length. It does not have an immigration office and guests need to check in at one of the international airports if flying in from outside Mozambique.

ARRIVING AT INHACA
When you arrive at Inhaca, you will be transferred by smaller boats (banana boats) to the shore, the fee of this trip is 25 MT p/p.
You will be dropped at the main beach where you will have to pay Inhaca Island tax. The fees below are irrespective of the period/duration you will stay on the Island:
- Mozambican citizens – 100 MT
- Foreigners: 200 MT
Guides with recognized shirts can advise should you need any information. They will ask if you need help with luggage and you can tip them between 50 MT and 100 MT.
Lodges will normally collect their guests on the beach.
Guest can walk the 400 meters to the village center – please note that it is a sandy route and can be an issue for elderly people – especially on a hot day.
Useful tips and information:
- Beer, snacks and, sometimes, egg burgers are for sale on Kanyaka.
- Feel free to bring along your own snacks and refreshments as well as toilet paper (toilet on ferry).
- Wear appropriate clothing and shoes, you might have to wade through knee deep water when arriving by small boat transfer.
